An exploration of the repressed, esoteric feminine mysteries in the Bible through the lives of four women, all archetypes of the sacred prostitute

• Shows how these four archetypal women represent the four stages of development of soul consciousness

• Reveals how the fear of the power of the sacred prostitute led to a rejection of female sexuality and a destructive dualistic notion of men and women

• Explains how the dogma of the Immaculate Conception represents the repression of the divine feminine in Christianity

In Feminine Mysteries in the Bible, Ruth Rusca unveils sacred mysteries of the feminine and the alchemical relationship of the male and female forces at the heart of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Drawing on over 30 years of research, she explores four archetypal women in the Bible: Tamar, the sacred prostitute; Rahab, the meretrix; Ruth, who redeems the soul; and Bathsheba, the daughter of the Goddess. These women--sacred prostitutes one and all--represent the indestructible feminine life force, the wisdom of the Goddess, and the transformative power of the soul, and they symbolize the four stages of the development of soul consciousness.

Mary, mother of Jesus, is the quintessence of these four women, but Rusca shows that the dogma of the Immaculate Conception has repressed the significance of Mary and subverted the divine feminine in Christianity due to the church’s fear of women and their life-giving energy. These women pass an imperishable feminine life force from generation to generation, and understanding their lives creates a path to overcoming the destructive tendencies of dualistic “male-female” thinking--a duality that profanes feminine sexuality and mysteries rather than revering and celebrating them.

come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon you standest is holy. And Joshua did so. (Joshua 5:13–15) This captain of the host of the Lord is an angel who had been promised from God to his chosen people as guide and leader in the conquest of the Promised Land (Exodus 23:20). Joshua seems to be expressing here

to a spiritual realm where physical motherhood is transformed into spiritual motherhood. Ruth, like Tamar and Rahab, is a spiritual foremother of Jesus and, also like them, is not a Hebrew. She is the Urform, the first manifestation, of Christic soul consciousness. With Christic soul consciousness, I mean a spiritual truth that has its roots in the four women. Ruth is the first who descended her redeemed soul experience into the earth. In this sense, she could be a prefiguration of the female

kinsman” (Ruth 3:9). (“Spread thy skirt over thine handmaid” was a delicate way to make an offer of marriage.) Boaz praised Ruth for her kindness and for being focused in her work. When doing the work of the soul, it is important not to be distracted by outer activities, to hold with determination to your path to redemption, even when it is a lonely, hard, and challenging path that calls for faith in yourself and the power of love. Ruth’s complete dedication to her work is honored and rewarded

the power that wants to restore the lost harmony and completeness in our souls through introducing the missing daughter into the holy family. After many years of research, I came to the conclusion that the Immaculate Conception is the “architect’s blueprint” and the nativity of Mary is the realization of that divine design, its incarnation in human beings and the personification of the image of the divine daughter. The four biblical women are signposts to the unfolding of this hidden pattern

lost our soul-teachers; the image of God has lost its female soul, once represented by Sophia (in the Gnostic view), the source of his power and the spirit of female wisdom. This schism and the ensuing loss have damaged our lives and the life of our Mother Earth and all her creatures. The feminine life force, the serpent power, can be deadly as well as life transforming, depending on our awareness of it. This can be seen in the way we often attach a negative, death-bringing interpretation to a
