Dear Reader,

If you've been to Cedar Cove before, you've probably met my friend Grace Sherman. You can usually find her at home—she lives at 204 Rosewood Lane—or at the public library, where she works. Like me, she grew up in this town and she's raised two daughters here. But did you hear that about six months ago, her husband disappeared? Just…disappeared. Where's Dan? Why did he go? Who's he with? Will Grace ever find out?

I hope that all of us, her family and friends, are bringing her comfort during this difficult time. Comfort and a sense of shelter. I'm continually reminded that life can and does go on. For instance, everyone's been discussing weddings and babies lately. Justine, my daughter, rather impulsively got married a little while ago. Grace's daughter Kelly recently had a baby. Unfortunately, she refuses to accept that Dan might not return to see his first grandchild. Grace's older daughter, Maryellen, is more realistic. Grace thinks she's seeing a new man but for some reason won't say who it is.

Then there's Jack Griffin, our local newspaper editor, the man I've been seeing. And…well, I have lots to tell you. Come on over and we'll talk!

going to remarry and this party is just a friends thing…. If you came, that would be fabulous but only because I want you to meet Teri. Oh, did I mention we’re holding it at The Captain’s Galley, in the bar?” She managed to get all that out in a single breath. “Halloween night,” she added. “I’ll get back to you.” Maryellen thought that was fair enough. After two glorious days and nights with her husband, Justine no longer had any doubts about her marriage. She was more in love than she’d

appreciated her attitude and her strong work ethic. When it was time for her six-month evaluation, Zach called her into his office. “Sit down, Janice,” he said, gesturing toward the chair across from his desk. Janice sat on the edge of the chair and met his look with a tentative smile, almost as if she were nervous about what he might say. “You’ve been with the firm half a year now.” “Has it really been that long?” It felt as though she’d always been part of his office team. She was well

“Mr. Griffin.” “Please,” he insisted, “call me Jack.” “All right.” She lowered her gaze, apparently reading the menu, but Jack had the feeling she already knew what she wanted to order. He knew what he wanted. The crab cakes were excellent. But this meeting wasn’t about crab cakes or any other menu item. “I imagine you’re wondering why I called you,” Jack said as he set aside the menu. “I assume it has to do with Eric.” Then, as if she couldn’t help herself, she asked, “How is he?” “Not

seat. “Let’s grab some soup from the deli and eat down by the waterfront,” Kelly suggested. It was a lovely spring day after a week of rain, and the fresh air would do them all good. “Sounds like a great idea,” Maryellen told her. Practical, too, since it would be easier to amuse Tyler at the park than in a crowded restaurant. Maryellen phoned in their order and her sister trekked down to grab a picnic table. Several other people had the same idea, but she’d secured a table for them by the

entrance into the world when they did, he might have coaxed her into bed with him. But when he’d returned from the hospital, she’d had time to think, time to assess whether this was the right step for them. Her decision was that, yes, eventually it should and would happen—but unlike Jack, she wasn’t in a hurry. In the weeks since, he’d done his best to shower her with love, much as she did those fancy roses she’d planted. “I heard from Eric this afternoon,” he told her. “He asked if you’d be
